Kort svensk summering:
THE FDI & UNEP ? GLOBAL MERCURY PARTNERSHIP
The FDI Dental Amalgam Task Team (DATT) is actively involved in the ongoing United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) process to develop a legally binding instrument governing mercury.
Since joining the UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) Global Mercury Partnership in 2009, FDI has been engaged in the Mercury-Containing Products and Waste Management Partnership Area Meetings. Dr Peter Cooney (World Dental Development and Health Promotion Committee) represented FDI and DATT (Dental Amalgam Task Team) at the Products Area meeting, 27-28 April, 2010 in Washington.
The first UNEP Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC 1) meeting was held in Stockholm, Sweden from 7-11 June. Representatives from 192 members states of the UN attended, along with international inter-governmental organizations (eg. WHO) and non governmental organisations, including the FDI.
Dr Stuart Johnston (Dental Practice Committee) and Dr Julian Fisher (FDI Head Office) represented the FDI and Dental Amalgam Task Team at INC 1.
FDI Executive Committee received a report from DATT in July and approved DATT?s recommended course of action. An email with comprehensive supporting documents was sent to all member national dental associations on 6 August.
Drs Cooney and Johnston will be making a report to General Assembly on behalf of DATT. Substantial time has been allocated for discussion, so that national dental associations are fully briefed on this critical issue.
Good communication both internally and externally is paramount. Council, Committees, DATT and Head Office are looking forward to speaking to FDI?s membership in Salvador to ensure the best outcome for our patients.
